SALIX

SALIX
antiquissimis temporibus in coronis locum habuit. Et quidem cum eo tempore coronae vinculi tantum usum praebuerint, quippe capiti inter convivialem laetitiam adstringendo primitus repertae, ex Amerina salice nexae coronae placuerunt, donec sequiori aevô, crescente luxu, ludibriô haberi, et quod nexibus tantum ac vitilibus esset idonea, coronamentum rusticorum appellari salix coepit. Eiusmodi tamen coronâ Megisthen usum fuisse totos decem menses, Anacreon tradit Comm. l. 2. Imo eius usum apud Samios durâsse, usque ad Polycratis aetatem, refert Athen. l. 15. qui priscum id coronamenti genus Carum fuisse, occasione statuae Iunonis, cum apud ipsos fugam meditaretur, longissimis salicis ramis implicitae, addit. Coeterum ἱερὸνςτύπος, sacer stipes, Apollonio Rhodio haec arbor dicitur l. 4. Et Scythae olim ῥάβδοισι, ἰτεΐῃσι, virgis salignis, inprimis in divinatione utebantur, teste Herodotô l. 4. ubi grandes virgarum huiusmodi fasces humi positos dissolvisse ac separatim ponentes illarum singulas, vaticinatos, dein eas iterum convol visse atque in unum composuisse, more a Maioribus tradito, narrat. Tradit tamen Plin. Homero eam fuisse frugiperdam, quod ocyssune amittat semen; secutamque aetatem scelere suô interpretatam esse hanc sententiam, quando semen salicis mulieri sterilitatis medicamentum esse constat, l. 16. c. 26. ubi plura de hac arbore. Vide quoque eum l. 16. c. 40. ubi inter arbores scutis faciendis, quorum plaga contrahat se protinus cludatque suum vulnus et ob id contumacius transmittat ferrum, idoneam salicem quoque recenset: ut et supra voce Crates, Laqueus, Osanna, Palmae ac infra, ubi de Vimine.
